Susan and I had the opportunity to join friends aboard the beautiful 75-foot Sunreef sailing catamaran Ocean Vibes for eight lovely days cruising the British Virgin Islands. “Discovered” by Christopher Columbus in 1493 on his second voyage to America, the islands had been settled by the Arawak as early as 200BC. A volcanic archipelago located about 1,100 miles southeast from Fort Lauderdale, Florida the British Virgin Island chain is one of the most beautiful sailing destinations in the western hemisphere.
I’ve been visiting the BVI since my 20’s when I was traveling the Caribbean on business and fell in love with the people, the culture and the scenic beauty. Many things have changed ashore since then but once one casts off the lines and heads out into the beautiful blue Caribbean waters, it seems as if nothing has changed. The timeless beauty of the BVI prevails in the bays, hills and harbors of the many islands in the chain.
While I have cruised these islands as a bare-boat captain, sailing with a professional crew exceeded my wildest expectations. The biggest decision each day was which wine to pair with dinner and from which deck to watch the sunset. Let me say if you have an opportunity to cruise the British Virgin Islands on Ocean Vibes, take it, for beautiful memories that will last for the rest of your life!
