Edinburgh has become one of our favorite cities abroad. Dating from the Middle Ages it received its royal charter in the 12th century and became known as the capital city of Scotland in the mid-14th century. Located on the Firth of Forth, Edinburgh is a beautiful, historic city with lively arts and cultural scene, European cuisine and an engaging and friendly population.
Susan and I spent 10 days exploring the neighborhoods adjacent to Old Town, the historic Royal Mile, and the tram system. The Newtown and Stockbridge neighborhoods were built between 1767 and 1850 and retain much of the original neoclassical and Georgian architecture and are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Formed through a grant from James VII to allow expansion in the north of the city to relieve overcrowding inside the walls of Old Town, it is a convenient location to the central city.
We also took a train to Glasgow for a concert and dinner at our favorite restaurant. Another day we rented a car and drove to St. Andrews to explore ancient ruins and visit the “Old Course” for lunch.
As we have been here many times, Edinburgh seems like a second home. We have our favorite pubs, favorite shops, favorite cathedral, and museum, restaurants we always visit and walks we always take. We look at each other and say, “we could live here…”
With so much going on it’s worth a visit. Edinburgh is also a great jumping off point to visit the other regions of Scotland within hours by car or train and all of Europe is accessible by air in 2 to 3 hours.
