Earlier in the year I was at Road America with friends from Dallas attending the Historic Races. Road America is one of the longest race tracks in the world, an American version of Spa-Francorchamps, rolling terrain with a great series of turns and straights. One of the best venues to watch auto racing anywhere.
The field was broad and varied, with over 450 entries representing classes from pre-war Indy cars to modern area Le Mans Prototypes, but the real show was celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Can-Am racing series. This series ran from 1966 – 1974 providing some of the most outrageous racing action ever. The regulations were minimal as far as design and aerodynamics with no limits on displacement or horsepower which resulted in cars with up to 1000-horsepower that weighed around 1300-pounds. Restored historic Can-Am cars were surpassing 180-miles per hour on the start/finish straight.
What made this outing special was that a friend from Dallas was racing his McLaren Can-Am car at the 50th Anniversary. Getting an insiders perspective and spending time in the paddock watching preparations for each of the practice, qualifying and race sessions enhanced the experience.
On Friday a large group of cars drove from the track to downtown Elkhart Lake with police escort for an informal concours/street party. All in all, a great time, with super friends, here are a few pictures to capture the weekend.
