Fremont Street dates to the earliest days of Las Vegas history becoming the first paved street in 1925. Gambling has been here prior to the first Nevada gambling licenses issued in 1931. It was the place to be in Vegas before the ‘60s development of Las Vegas Blvd when huge new casino / resort / entertainment complexes took over the gambling scene.
Re-named Glitter Gulch in 1946 Fremont Street remained an active, if rundown area of town with several casino properties and hotels as development continued south on Las Vegas Blvd. In 1995, to counter the decline, the Fremont Street Experience opened with a pedestrian mall and overhead light shows surrounded by casinos, restaurants, and clubs. Fremont Street east is populated with clubs, vintage neon lights and hotels ending with Container Park, a shopping and entertainment venue built from shipping containers.
Fremont Street today is an edgy counterpoint to the homogenized and family-safe fun on the Las Vegas Strip south of town. It’s a little down-market with all that implies; it’s crowded at night with many people indulging, you need to keep aware of your surroundings and possessions. One gets a sense that this is how it used to be, when taking a chance really meant something. If you become bored with the same old shows and walking through one themed casino after another, a trip to Fremont Street might just be the thing.
